Overview of Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein, a small landlocked alpine country nestled between Switzerland and Austria, is a wealthy principality ruled by the same royal family since the 18th century. As the fourth smallest country in Europe by population (38,749), its official language is German, with locals speaking a distinct dialect. The capital, Vaduz, is the nation’s second-largest city. Spanning 160 square kilometers, Liechtenstein offers picturesque landscapes, including mountains with ski slopes, castles, and rolling fields. Having signed the Schengen Agreement in 2008, Liechtenstein became the most recent Schengen Member State, officially joining the Schengen Area in 2011. Notably, it is one of four Schengen states that is not also a member of the EU.
Visiting Liechtenstein on a Schengen Visa
Liechtenstein does not issue its own visas. If you are eligible for a Schengen visa and wish to visit Liechtenstein, you should apply through Switzerland (via a Swiss consulate or visa application center), which handles Liechtenstein’s consular affairs and has the same visa code. Because Liechtenstein is a Schengen member, anyone with a valid Schengen visa is eligible to enter the country.
Important Entry Notes
- Notification of Changes: If there are any changes to your travel itinerary after submitting your visa application, promptly inform the Swiss consulate or visa application center. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of your visa.
- Visa Validity and Entry: Possession of a Schengen visa does not guarantee entry into Liechtenstein or the Schengen Area. Border authorities have the final decision on entry, and you may be required to provide additional documentation at the point of entry.
- Additional Documentation: Be prepared to present documents that verify your financial means, accommodation details, and the purpose of your visit upon arrival in Liechtenstein.
For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it’s recommended to consult the official Swiss consulate or embassy in your country before planning your trip to Liechtenstein.
